Faces and portraits are interesting on a flat surface. The most familiar three dimensional subject where each facet communicates a nuance.  A portrait is a facsimile and is a reflection of only elements of the real.  A good portrait must communicae more than just the one pose.

As art is its own reality, a figure in a painting has must inhabit its flat space the way a person inhabits their world.
